I can’t believe we are already over halfway through April! I know that my calendar is quickly filling up, and I’m sure yours is too. There are many exciting events coming up in the flute world, so I wanted to share some of them with you.
Saturday, April 29th is the GIFC Sandra Graef Memorial flute competition. This is a unique competition for middle school students to honor the memory of flutist and middle school band director Sandra Graef. The Indy Flute Shop sponsors the event, and first and second place prize winners will receive a gift card to the Indy Flute Shop towards a new instrument. The application deadline has passed, but please feel free to join us to support the area’s great middle school flute players!
On July 10-14th, the IU Jacobs School of Music is holding a workshop/graduate level class entitled “Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning.” In this workshop, participants will explore how mindfulness can benefit music teachers in both personal and professional settings, and examine ways in which mindfulness-based practices might be incorporated into music teaching and learning. Registration is available at http://music.indiana.edu/precollege/adult/mindfulness/index.shtml
Lastly, the Andover Educators Association is presenting their biennial Body Mapping Conference in Columbus, Georgia. Andover Educators train musicians and music educators to accurately support and enhance movement in practice and performance with the goal of increasing ease while reducing and eliminating injury. This 5-day conference will include classes in “What Every Musician Needs to Know About the Body,”
member presentations, supervised teaching, master classes, concerts,
Alexander Technique, and the Feldenkrais method. More information can be found at https://music.columbusstate.edu/aeconference/index.php.
