Hello everyone! And welcome back to another episode of our “Paige’s of History” Spotlight.
This week we’ll be looking at the years 1945 through 1960…
On April 12, 1947, comedian and talk show host extraordinaire David Letterman was born right here, in Indianapolis.
That same year, in a YMCA on the West side of Chicago, approximately 120 directors assembled for a six-hour clinic and new music reading session. Today, what is now known as the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, hosts 18,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 40 countries.
in 1950, Robert Carree developed the Buffett R13, which is still one of the most popular clarinets in the world.
On June 25th, 1951, RCA Broadcasted its first color television program on CBS.
On October 4th, 1957- The Cold War began to heat up when Russia launched Sputnik 1, causing a reaction which refocused curriculum on math and science, pulling away from the arts.
In 1959, Alaska and Hawaii become the 49th and 50th states respectively.
Meanwhile, here at home, Paige’s Music had the largest and most complete record department in the region. Shoppers during this time might’ve even run into Warner Paige the 3rd. By his own admission “He couldn’t imagine growing up without pushing the broom and selling records”.
By 1957, Paige’s was THE destination for service and repair of all makes of radios, organs, TV, sound equipment, band equipment, and accordions. A notable employee during this time period was Mrs. Henrietta McKeen. She was the record department manager from approximately 1945 to 1952 – and helped grow the department because of her knowledge of music from “Brahms to ‘Be-bop’”.
That’s all the time we have for today. If you haven’t already, make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with what’s new at Paige’s Music.
