Well just like that, another National Flute Association convention is in the books! This year’s convention was in Minneapolis, which is a first for me. As always, there were so many incredible recitals, learning opportunities, and chances to visit with vendors. Unfortunately I was not able to stay for the entire duration of the convention, so I squeezed in as much as I could on Thursday and Friday!
A theme that I have noticed since I started attending NFA conventions in 2014 is that flutists are really starting to pay attention to their bodies and how playing affects their posture and overall health. If you have been following this blog for a while, you have read my posts about my own struggles with tendonitis and fibromyalgia, which presents itself mostly in my upper back and shoulders. Several sessions I attended dealt with warming up both the body and mind in preparation for playing, and I also attended a booth where my posture and playing position was analyzed using the concept of body mapping. So fascinating! Watch for more in-depth updates on that soon.
One of the most fascinating workshops I attended went in-depth–literally!!–to the head and neck and what happens in there during flute playing. A husband-wife team consisting of a doctor/bassoon player and a teacher/flutist presented on common problems associated with flute playing, and there was a video of the flutist playing with a camera down her nose and into her throat! Once that video series has been uploaded on the NFA website, I will be sure to share it with you.
