Many of you know that when your child first starts the process of selecting an instrument to play in school band, Paige’s Music sends representatives to many schools throughout the state to play-test, hold meetings, and provide paperwork to simplify the process. But did you know that we also provide a similar service for step-up instruments? Many schools work closely with Paige’s Music and the Indy Flute Shop to select preferred instruments with the director to streamline the step-up process.

Particularly for schools that are not in the Indianapolis area, many directors find that the best way to help their ensembles perform better and keep students enthusiastic is to hold what we call a “step-up night” at the school. This involves a three-step process:
1. Directors give their step-up instrument preferences to representatives at Paige’s Music. Our district managers send a set of testing instruments to the school, usually for a few weeks. During this time, students can work with directors to get a chance to play these higher-quality instruments during class to get a feel for their potential.
2. Directors will send home information to parents about the date and time of the step-up display, which is held at the school. Paige’s Music also sends letters and emails, which are personalized with information including current renters’ payments and rent credit, which can be applied towards a step-up instrument. This information includes a website that parents can use to schedule a time to meet with a Paige’s Music representative.
3. The night of the display, parents are asked to bring their student’s current instrument. Paige’s employees will be on hand to answer any questions and, if the parent has made a decision, provide paperwork to facilitate the exchange at the school.

In my job at the IFS, one of my main responsibilities is helping get students into better instruments. I always encourage parents to bring their child in to select the instrument that is perfect for them. However, I do understand that sometimes that is just not an option. These step-up displays are a convenient and easy way to upgrade, and I am always willing to send a specific instrument to the school to facilitate a students’ specific need. Call or email me with any questions!
